What we love about Fitness SF

They're a local Bay Area gym chain that serves the community well. With a very respectable amenity set across their 8 locations, members in San Francisco and Oakland must be proud of this local product.

  • Local gym for San Francisco Bay Area residents. Feels great to hand over your hard-earned cash to a small business that has history and a foothold in one of the best cities in the country.

  • Their Transbay location is a sight to behold. "This expansive facility... spans two city blocks!" There are also over 15 power racks / Olympic lifting platforms.

  • Ah, a breath of fresh air with Fitness SF. They have no cancellation, processing, annual or enrollment fees! We haven't ever seen a gym out there with these perks!

What we wish Fitness SF would improve

Many folks in the bay are quite happy with Fitness SF's offerings as a whole. But would we update and change a few things? Of course.

  • Not a single location has a swimming/lap pool. These are hard to find amenities in the Bay Area.

  • Basketball courts were available as an amenity. Other gyms double up this space to add badminton or pickleball. Unfortunately Fitness SF doesn't offer any.

  • Fitness SF would expand and spread their magic to other parts of the bay. We're sure many locals would jump onboard.

How much is Fitness SF?

Pricing is ultra clear, super easy with Fitness SF.

  • For all 8 of their locations, it is a flat $99.95 per month. You'll get access to all of the gyms in the Bay Area at that price, with no limitations on visits, equipment or amenities. This is the only membership option if your home gym is any of the actual San Francisco locations: Fillmore, Mid-Market, SOMA, Transbay, Castro and Embarcadero.
  • For their Marin location, it's $69.95 for access to just that club, or the $99.95 if you'd like to workout in SF/Oakland.
  • For their Oakland location, it's $49.95 for access to just that club, or again $99.95 if you'd want to workout in SF/Marin.

On the front page of their website, Fitness SF also states:

  • No enrollment fees
  • No cancellation fees
  • No processing fees
  • No annual fees

Like we said, super easy, right?

  • No annual fees for your Fitness SF membership. Bonus: No cancellation fees to stop it, either.
  • No enrollment fees at Fitness SF. Another bonus: No processing fees to get your membership started.

Gym Pricing Tiers Explained

There are 3-4 main pricing tiers that nearly all gyms across the country fall into. Generally, higher prices = more amenities and services.

$10 - $25 /month — Value

  • Standard/basic equipment
  • Cardio machines: treadmills, ellipticals
  • Various free-weights, strength machines

$15 - $30 /month — High Value Low Price

  • All the above, plus a few have saunas or pools
  • Massage and/or Tanning options
  • Expect newer style amenities like Olympic lifting platforms, functional turf and cardio cinema.

$25 - $65 Monthly — Mid-Tier

  • All the above, placed in larger facilities and spaces. Pools, saunas and steam are a must.
  • Basketball courts and childcare were the main amenities.
  • These are your "older" more aged "big-box" gyms, often with hundreds of locations spanning the country

$65 and up  — Boutique/Specialty/Luxury

  • Highest end cardio equipment with advanced, expensive machines
  • Specialty group training and fitness classes
  • Luxury or boutique locker rooms, workspaces and lounges

"Is this gym worth it?"

Use our guides to help inform and educate what a gym can offer your fitness lifestyle. Only you can truly decide if a gym is worth it!

Most folks in the San Francisco Bay area, which include Silicon Valley and the eastern valley portions—know how expensive nearly everything is. When looking at gyms and fitness options, we're sure they already have this in mind.

And, it's not just San Francisco, but nearly every other large metro in the country. New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and others all face higher costs, and unfortunately pretty expensive gym memberships.

In this case, Fitness SF is working a balancing act, vying for you to join their clubs at a cost that is sustainable for their business but ultimately have you feeling their gyms are worth every dollar.

We applaud their newer, up-to-date amenity sets, with locations that are fresher and filled with equipment that is popular. That means every location has Olympic lifting platforms—a stunning 15 at their Transbay location! Same for their functional turf areas, a staple at any of their 8 locations. It doesn't stop: complimentary towel service can be a lifesaver both on the workout floor or showers—yes, Fitness SF has got it covered for all of their gyms. Even the single cold plunge at the Fillmore location may have you wanting to join. If any of these are enticing, this may be the gym for you. Of course, workout with all your standard gear: cardio, strength machines, freeweights, kettlebells and more.

However, there's just a single pool, steam room and hot tub for this whole chain. Nor is there tanning, childcare or gyms open 24/7.

So, here comes their balancing act: all of the above, all club access for $99.95. While it's a fair share more than some of the national competitors like City Sports Club—$39.00 month—it may be the hidden fees that drives you to the local option.

We consider Fitness SF more of a "big-box" gym option, their amenity sets are that thorough. And in a 7x7 mile city, there aren't any gym options this good. Add in your local flair and home-grown roots, you may just accept that fact that nationwide, or especially in the Bay—sometimes the best things that cost more are worth every penny.
