What we love about Crunch Fitness

Absolutely love their approach to fitness: value packed and amenity+service oriented. Crunch is an excellent, all-around gym chain that can be had for affordable prices.

  • Fun, energetic, and lively brand. Their positive attitude translates into good vibes, which translates into electric workouts.

  • Busy parents can find childcare at Crunch at about 40% of their gyms. We count 110 different locations where you can workout with your kid nearby.

  • Tanning and massage masters! Crunch is the leading gym chain in the country offering these amenities. We count over 245 gyms with tanning beds, and 244 gyms with massage chairs.

What we wish Crunch Fitness would improve

Crunch Fitness already offers a gigantic selection of amenities and services. But, we can still name a few things we'd like to see from this gym chain.

  • Some amenities were more widespread/available. Pools only at 12 of 300+ locations. 10 locations with basketball. 39 locations are open 24-hours-a-day.

  • We wish their pricing tiers were more consistent. Even though basic memberships start at $00—that price can change drastically if you're in an expensive market. Did you know that some gyms in San Francisco start at $55 monthly?

  • Signature clubs should be more widespread, along with larger gyms.  With all that this chain offers, it would be wise to see them grow their clubs to pack in all these amenities.

How much is Crunch Fitness?

Crunch Fitness clubs compete in the HVLP (high-value-low-price) segment, and generally have clear pricing and amenity options. You'll easily be able to compare different gyms both in and out of Crunch with their tiered setup:

  • Base $9.99 to $34.99/month - Single club access - Enough for a solid, basic workout. Cardio, weights and machines.
  • Peak $24.99 to $44.99/month - Multi club access - This level (generally) adds on Group Fitness. Locations like Schaumburg and Long Beach give you HydroMassage. The Creedmoor location will include the sauna.
  • Peak Results $29.99 to $49.99/month - Multi club access - If not already added, this tier will include cycle/ride classes, small group training, guest privileges, tanning and babysitting.

Did you know that Crunch gyms are franchised? That's why the differences between Peak and Peak Results vary between locations across the country. Usually, several Crunch gyms in your area will have similar pricing, and similar amenity access tiers because they're owned by the same group.

The annual fees for most groups was $49.99, but expect to pay $59.99 for Crunch Select and $89.99 Crunch Signature gyms. That is billed 60 days from your start.

Initiation fees range from $79 to $0, and are highly dependent on the location plus promotional period. The higher fees are for the cheaper/more basic membership types.

We also saw a $2 processing fee for every single location. It's small but it hurts, because it's billed every month. Doesn't matter your payment method, the $2 is consistent—essentially adding that to your "$9.99, $24.99 or $39.99" cost.

Finally, we liked how the terms (contract length) for nearly all gyms were month-to-month no contract.

A word about Crunch Signature locations: these are more boutique gyms from Crunch with enhanced amenity sets. You'll see things like

  • Dedicated group fitness studios
  • Full service locker rooms with towel service
  • Rituals Products
  • Saunas and Steam rooms

Memberships for Signature locations are similar to the above in a tiered manner. The three options are:

  • Single-club $54 to $93.75
  • All Signature locations in one metro ~$74.25
  • All Crunch locations nationwide ~$112.50

Those metros are San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Miami and New York—totaling 28 Signature locations.

  • "Standard" Crunch aka most clubs have a $49.99 annual fee. "Select" locations are $59.99 and "Signature" gyms are $89.99 yearly. You'll pay that fee 60 days after starting your membership.
  • Initiation fees have ranged from $79 for Base, $59 on Peak, and $39 on Peak Results plans. However, these are often on promotion and you'll see them drop by 50%, or $1 or $0.

There are 3-4 main pricing tiers that nearly all gyms across the country fall into. Generally, higher prices = more amenities and services.

$15 - $30 /month — High Value Low Price

"Is this gym worth it?"

Use our guides to help inform and educate what a gym can offer your fitness lifestyle. Only you can truly decide if a gym is worth it!

Over the years, Crunch gyms have started to creep up in size. And it doesn't mean bigger is always better—but more space allows more amenities, services and room to workout!

New locations open up at about 1-2 a month across the country, and these are mixes of brand new construction gyms or takeovers from competitors.

Members benefit because newer Crunch locations mean fresher paint, mats, machines, bathrooms and more. You'll be harder pressed to find bench presses falling apart, and cable-strength machines either frayed or broken.

All of this is to say that Crunch is continually improving their product, and is one of the best on the value side of the equation.

Unfortunately, pricing has also started to rise, with some coastal cities seeing monthly pricing at or above $50 a month. Still, the huge majority of locations (especially the new ones) have deals starting at $9.99 or $14.99. If you can snag a membership at one of their "founding" rates, or even monthly dues below $29.99, then Crunch gyms are absolutely worth it.

At the pricing side, they've got it nailed down for the most part. You put all this together and there's no doubt about it: Crunch Fitness is one of the best gym chains in the country. Their all around blend of amenities, service and value has us recommending to everybody that they are worth every dollar.

Crunch Fitness - most definitely worth it!
