What we love about Planet Fitness

This is possibly the most popular gym chain out there, with over 2400+ locations in the country. We like how they have locations nearby to everyone!

  • So many locations to choose from—there's likely 1, 2, or even 3 nearby. Even if you live in a remote area, Planet Fitness probably lurking around the corner.

  • Enough can't be said about their all inclusive "No Judgements" mantra. For first-time gym go-ers, or even those who may be subconscious about showing up—know that the vibes here are perfect.

  • Many Planet Fitness locations are open 24-hours-a-day. What an amazing benefit for members who work non-standard hours.

What we wish Planet Fitness would improve

While Planet Fitness may serve many of their members quite well, there are still a few things we'd like to see.

  • Saunas and pools were available. It's probably not in the cards though: that's not part of Planet's key offerings. We can only dream!

  • We wish childcare was offered at Planet. It's a highly wanted amenity that unlocks fitness for many parents—the perfect story for Planet.

  • Turf workout areas are popular for bodyweight exercises, foam rolling, sled pulls, stretching and more. We wish Planet Fitness would incorporate these into their clubs.

How much is Planet Fitness?

Planet Fitness memberships range from the $10 Classic to $24.99 Black Card, with some locations offering a $15 Classic No-Commitment (no contract) option. We looked at a few different Planet's across the country:

  • San Francisco California - $15 monthly, $29 Startup Fee. $24.99 Black Card, $1 Startup Fee.
  • New York City Herald Square - $14.99 monthly, $39 startup. $24.99 Black Card, $1 Startup Fee
  • Naperville Illinois - $10 monthly, $29 Startup Fee. $24.99 Black Card, $1 Startup Fee,
  • Hialeah/Miami Florida -  $10 monthly, $29 Startup Fee, single club access. $24.99 Black Card, $1 Startup Fee

So, across the country you can get into Planet Fitness with the Classic at $10 or $15 monthly.

Some locations have the $15 Classic, which is the same pricing as above, but with a 12-month No commitment. We saw this at the Durham, North Carolina and Richardson, Texas locations.

Stepping up to the $24.99 option brings you the Planet Fitness Black Card. Amazingly this price was the same at every single location—kudos to them for standardizing and not price gouging. You get:

  • All club access and you can bring a guest anytime
  • Massage chairs, HydroMassage (if available), Tanning (if available)
  • Additional rewards/discounts, plus 50% off select drinks,

Startup fees are generally $29 or $39, but with promotions have consistently been $1. Annual fee is $49 everywhere we looked, plus comes with the option to cancel online, anytime.

  • Annual fee has been $49 for every location we checked. We also like the option to cancel online, anytime.
  • "Startup" aka initiation fees range from $29 to $39. The $1 fee we saw was part of their year-end promo.
  • Gym prices got you stressed out? Start with a free trial instead.

Who does Planet Fitness cater to?

We all have different bodies, different goals and different fitness journeys. Some gyms may fit a person better than others. So who would enjoy this gym most?

  • To be clear, the welcoming environment that Planet has built makes it so all people of all walks of life would enjoy their gyms. But, we do see more beginners and more cardio-focused gym-goers at this chain. A big part of that involves Planet's mix of equipment: treadmills and ellipticals plus other cardio often take up half of the workout floor.

If you're interested in a less intimidating environment, and one that actively embraces their "No Judgement" mantra, Planet Fitness is great place to call home.

Gym Pricing Tiers Explained

There are 3-4 main pricing tiers that nearly all gyms across the country fall into. Generally, higher prices = more amenities and services.

$10 - $25 /month — Value

  • Various free-weights, strength machines

$15 - $30 /month — High Value Low Price

  • Massage and/or Tanning options
  • Expect newer style amenities like Olympic lifting platforms, functional turf and cardio cinema.

$25 - $65 Monthly — Mid-Tier

  • All the above, placed in larger facilities and spaces. Pools, saunas and steam are a must.
  • Basketball courts and childcare were the main amenities.
  • These are your "older" more aged "big-box" gyms, often with hundreds of locations spanning the country

"Is this gym worth it?"

Use our guides to help inform and educate what a gym can offer your fitness lifestyle. Only you can truly decide if a gym is worth it!

Planet Fitness is a great gym option for those who want a comfortable, safe and relaxed environment. Their "No Judgements" mantra is real—and is in place to encourage people of all walks of life that fitness isn't all heavy weights and big muscles. Knowing this helps us (and you!) determine if Planet is worth it.

Other things to consider: As one of the largest gym chains in the country, those in more rural areas may not have many fitness options nearby... but there's probably a Planet (or Anytime Fitness).  Accessibility is awesome, with nearly 2500 of their locations in the country.

On the workout floor, you'll find various versions of strength equipment alongside free weights. Know that those individual dumbbells may not be as heavy or abundant, compared to other fitness chains.

If you're looking for more comprehensive amenities or services, like a pool, basketball court or even childcare—Planet isn't going to be an option for you. Nor are there saunas or steam rooms, amenities that our readers frequently ask about.

Their biggest draw is going to be pricing. We're extremely impressed with their consistent $10 or $15 Basic membership across the entire country. Those in higher priced metros may pay more for a membership, but the $5 difference is minimal. Black Card at $24.99 brings together many more activities like tanning and HydroMassage, along with unlimited guest access.

These prices are enough to get many people started with the basics of fitness, especially those first on their journey. Altogether, we believe Planet is "worth it" to those who fit all the above.
