What we love about Life Time

This luxury gym/resort chain is truly breathtaking. We love the enormous selection of services, sports, amenities and more. Definitely have to mention that they have pickleball, the fastest growing sport in America!

  • Upscale and luxurious facilities that are are a premium above all other gym chains. Large, open areas. Well though out and planned experiences vs a plain ol' gym. We imagine their cedarwood sauna, and eucalyptus-scented steam rooms are glorious.

  • Gigantic amenity set. Life Time is an excellent option if you want to swim, play tennis, shoot hoops, relax in the sauna and much more. You could even do all the above in a single day's visit!

  • Fitness options for kids is off the charts. Do know that these are more program and lesson based camps/clinics/classes—which will come with an additional fee. Pick from junior tennis, racquetball, squash or basketball. You can even get your little ones started with rockwall climbing!

What we wish Life Time would improve

While LifeTime already offers a huge amount of amenities and services, we can still name a few things we'd like to see from this upscale gym chain.

  • There wasn't such a gigantic cost difference across the country. With the most expensive metros charging 3x the least expensive, we think thats egregious.

  • Metros like San Diego, Portland and Seattle had more locations to choose from. These 3 huge metros only have 3 clubs between them.

  • Some of their locations had 24/7 access. Life Time did offer this to some locations pre-pandemic, but no longer do. Even some smaller gym chains that charge a fraction of their price have all-night-workout-hours.

How much is Life Time?

There are generally two plans available at Life Time, which are Standard and Signature. A single, adult membership ranges from $99 to $299/month, where the cost is significantly different across the country. Check out the starting prices below and know that most major metros don't have the Standard membership—you automatically start at Signature:

  • $99/month - Castle Creek (Indianapolis, IN)
  • $129 - Tempe, Arizona
  • $149 - Schaumburg, Illinois
  • $179 - Garland Texas
  • $179 - Raleigh, North Carolina
  • $269 - Coral Gables, Florida
  • $279 - Midtown, New York City
  • $295 - Irvine, California
  • $299 - Walnut Creek, California

Additionally, we also saw options for 26 Under and Senior Citizen memberships—those who are aged 14-26 or 65 and up. At the cheapest, $129/month. At the high end, $265.

Finally, along with your regular adult membership, an option to add your child, aged 13 and below. That's counted as a Junior membership, and ranges in prices from $30 to $100.

In general, for Junior, 26 Under, and Senior Citizen plans, you can expect that they're

  • Limited to a single club
  • Limited in amenities (like Group Training)
  • More expensive in larger metro areas, just like Adult memberships.

We didn't see any annual pricing for annual fees during checkout, which is a huge positive at Life Time. Initiation fees were also $0 across every single club we looked at, wow! It's possible we're in a promotional period for them (December 2023), but we saw this pattern at every gym.

  • No annual fee listed on their website. No annual fee once we got to our customized membership contract. This looks like a huge win for Life Time!
  • No initiation fees for all 9 clubs we checked. Could be a promotion, but this is a good sign. Also during sign-up, only the pro-rated monthly amount is charged so your next month as a member would be the full charge.

"Is this gym worth it?"

Use our guides to help inform and educate what a gym can offer your fitness lifestyle. Only you can truly decide if a gym is worth it!

Life Time is not just a gym—they're an upscale athletic country club. While it's a bit outside of the gyms we typically review, they're an excellent addition to our comparison. Why is that? Well, they have a massive service and amenity selection that dwarfs many other chains.

Of course, you'll generally get an upgraded and modernized gym/workout floor. It may be spacious and large, full of cardio options, strength machines and weights—all of that is part of their playbook.

But, here are a few fitness features that some Life Time's will have, that aren't yet tracked by us: boxing gym, indoor water slide, karate studio, lazy river, MediSpa, outdoor play maze, pilates studio, physical therapy and chiropractic.

Did we mention that they have co-working and social areas, plus an option for live-in communities? What about a location with a pre-school, kids academy or run club? See, that's what Life Time does best: they extend past the typical gym with amenities that give more of an all-around luxury experience.

If any of these options fit your overall health-wellness lifestyle, then Life Time should be in consideration.
